Prince amazigh of the 7th century after J.C, chief of resistance to the Arab conquest

Its name is spelled various ways by the Moslem authors: Kosayla, Qosayla, Kusila. One brought it closer to the Latin name Caecilianus, Cécilien, pronounced Kekilianus and understood by Arabic Kacilia. It is a probable assumption when it is known that Kusila was Christian, but its name can also come from the amazigh. The dialects amazighs of Aurès, of which was resulting Kusila, still know a root KSL from which aksil derives, the name of the cheetah. Another name amazigh of the cheetah, aghilas/ghilas, is well employed like proper name with the Chenoua mount, in the west of Algiers. 
Kusila was the chief of the powerful tribe of Awraba which occupied a whole part of Aurès. it had initially fought the Arabs, but beaten with the Al Alurit battle, with the sources of Tlemcen, it made its tender and converts with Islam (675). it succeeds in gaining the confidence of the Moslem chief Abû Al Muhadjîr Dinâr and became even one of its collaborator close relations.

In 681, 'Uqba Ibn Nafi' ê, the famous conqueror of North Africa, recalled a few years earlier in the East, returned to the Maghreb. It was avenged for its successor Abû Dinâr and treated with Kusila hardness which was however Moslem. It made it cover chains and trailed it like an alive trophy in its ride through the Maghreb. 
“Among the insulting features that it allowed towards him, one tells the following: it had just received sheep and, wanting to make of it cut the throat of one, it ordered in Kusila to skin it”” That God directs the emir towards the good! known as the amazigh chief. I have here my young people and my servants who will be able to avoid me this sorrow. “'Uqba answered it by offensive words and ordered to him to leave: Kusila was withdrawn with anger and having cut the throat of the sheep, it essuya its hand still bloody on its beard. Some Arabs approached then and said to him: “That do you make amazigh?” With what answered: “That is good for the hairs” But old man among the Arabs passed and exclaimed: ” It is not for that, it is a threat which this amazigh makes you! “Then, Abû Muhadjîr Dinâr was addressed to 'Uqba and says to him: “That you have just made! Here is a man the most distinguished of among his people, a man who was still polytheist little time ago and you take with task to make E resentment in his heart! I now advise to you to make him bind the hands behind the back, otherwise you will be victim of his perfidy. ” “(According to Al Nuwayrî.)

Kusila succeeds in, indeed, fleeing and joining its men. It abjured Islam and, being combined to the Byzantines, it began again, with the head of a large army, war against the Arabs.

It surprised 'Uqba close to Tehuda, not far from Biskra and, after a terrible battle, it killed it as well as the majority of its men (633). 
Kusila went then on Kairouan, the fortified town of Arabic and removed it. It berbérisa its name in Taqirwant and made its capital of it. It was made crown and reigned during five years, from 633 to 638. Its authority was recognized by everyone and, of the opinion even of the Moslem authors, it covered with justice its subjects amazighs and Arabs and let the latter practise their religion freely. However, Kusila succeeds in neither gathering the amazighs nor to create a State. In 638, the calife' Abd Al Malek sent reinforcements with, for mission of taking again Kairouan. Zuhayr Ibn Qays, former companion of “Uqba, went on Kusila. This one, in front of the importance of the enemy forces, was folded up, calling for the aid the tribes of Aurès and the Byzantines, but it did not accept the awaited reinforcements. At the end, the Arabs, more, gained the victory. Kusila was killed and the amazighs which had escaped with the massacre were dispersed. Thus the resistance of Kusila ended. But a few years after, Aurès again ignited, with this time, a woman with the head of resistance: Kahina.
